Training activity

  • INTERNATIONAL NATO SUMMER SCHOOL: “Interdisciplinary methods to study geological hazards at hydroelectrical water reservoirs”
  • Period: 5-12 October 2024, Ganja, Azerbaijan.
  • Teachers: Alessandro Tibaldi, Fabio L. Bonali, Valentina Bracchi, Nino Tsereteli, Havenith Hans-Balder, Gulam Babayev, Yuliya Semenova, Tomas Panek and Michal Břežný.

This summer school, under the aegis of NATO Science for Peace and the International Lithosphere Program, focuses on training young researchers and advanced students on the methods for studying geological hazards threatening water reservoirs for hydroelectrical purposes. Special attention will be given to field and geophysical methodologies to analyse slope instability and earthquake hazards. Methods will include structural geology, geomorphology, stratigraphy-paleontology, geotechnics, paleoseismology and seismology.

The area of study, with different key site examples, is located in the Caucasus in Azerbaijan, in the tectonically active Kura fold-and-thrust belt, in the surroundings of the Mingachevir-Shamkir water reservoirs.

The instructors are from various universities of Italy, Belgium, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Georgia.
